I've been trying to write reviews about all the taco places (which I'll be referring as "taquerias" from now on) I've visited so far in Dallas area but I haven't because I am a lazy ass, so I'll start with Torteria Insurgentes.
I think I passed once in front of this place few months back but I sad: "Meh another Tex Mex restaurant advertising as authentic Mexican Food".
Until last weekend a chilango (person who was born in Mexico city, and don't come to me with the argument that chilangos are the ones that immigrate to Mexico city!!) friend invited us to go for dinner after an awesome mountain bike ride at Grapevine lake, I was starving and when he said Tortas over there were good I was ready!
So first things first, they have a replica of a Mexico City taxi, I was shocked I felt like taking the cab and asking the driver to take me to Tacos Chupacabras after a night of party back home but then I remembered I was in Dallas TX and it wasn't 4 AM (which is the time I used to visit taquerias after partying hard, yes that was like 10 years ago).
OK coming back to Torteria Insurgentes, the place it's just a regular non fancy mexican restaurant in town, you know not mint clean but not dirty, so we sit and there was the red salsa and the green salsa on the table, the server came and gave the menu which is pretty comprehensive, it starts with Quesadillas and when I say quesadillas I am not referring to the Tex Mex version which is a flour tortilla with melted cheese, your choice of chicken or beef and guacamole. After that in the menu there are tacos, tortas and chilaquiles!! (Disclaimer nor the quesadilla or the chilaquiles pictures are pictures from this place). I was also surprised that they didn't bring Chips and salsa so that makes a +1 for the place since that's not the way it works back home.
Since I was freaking starving I was tempted to order one item of each in the menu, but resisted the temptation and limited myself to a Cubana torta and a quesadilla de hongos.
So long story short, the torta and the quesadilla were just ok but the place has its merit, they DO serve authentic mexican food at least from my small village with around 10 millions inhabitants (Mexico city), I can't speak for all the regios (person who was born in Monterrey) that claim that tacos al pastor are called Trompo tacos if they come from the trompo... For chilangos pastor IS REQUIRED to come from the trompo otherwise it's not pastor!!!
So will try to keep the hard work of eating lots and writing about it, and definitely will come back to try tacos and chilaquiles since I learned that they have a branch in Garland hoping that the flavor does not change.
TRAGUEMOS COMO CERDOS!!!
Bye

y uno aquí comiendo verdaderas tortas auténticas... pero sin varo :(

ReplyDeleteCalm down you party-monster-4AM-Taco-Chubby-destroyer! Hahaha
ReplyDeleteBut nice review. I think, only to have that vochito (taxi) in front of the taqueria makes the visit worth.
It is important to see how the Mexican cuisine is little by little influencing the habits of our neighbors. So it is important that guys like you explain how is the right way to eat and enjoy our food!
